The Bears Online Hockey Academy is a cognitive development platform focusing on teaching players how to make better decisions through a top down approach as follows.

  1. What = Identify the problem
  2. Why = Explain the opportunity (offense) and challenge (defense)
  3. How = Explain how to most effectively capitalize on the opportunity (offense) and how to most effectively limit opportunity (defense)
  4. When = Explain cause and effect that gives you a higher probability of success given the recurring situation

As always, Bears hockey is disciplined and structured off the puck (support) and encourages educated freedom and ingenuity on the puck.

The point is to not solve every problem perfectly but to teach commonalities to set the mind at ease so the true ingenuity can flourish as support (your teammates strategy) and threats (the opponents defensive positions and actions) can be externalized which will allow the puck carrier (and his teammates) to truly play ahead of the game. By studying these recurring events, the player can repeat patterns over and over again and instinctively apply the most viable solutions to each situation. These habits can become a distraction and inhibit executions (i.e. slow the player down due to confusion and hesitation) if not understood and executed via subconscious and . The material aims to not satisfy one system or structure, but to allow flexibility to be applied to any system.

The material is necessary for any players at 14U (and older), recommended to the most dedicated 12U skaters and not recommended to 10U. We advise parents to allow your kids to take this at their own pace and will. Some players find this very boring and are simply not interested. That does not mean they are not going to “make it” or they don’t “have it”. They are simply not ready yet and that is okay. This material will come their way in one way or another at some point. If it is not exciting or fun to them, then do not shove it down their throats. All this being said, a 14U skater should either have the natural ability to do this or need to find a way to learn it or they will simply not be able to compete as effectively as others. Again, be reasonable as to your expectations and abilities that will or will not lead to convergence.
